It is brilliant….. Magical…… Easy to set up…… Cheap……
What is Chromecast?
Google’s Chromecast is a cheap media streaming dongle, that plugs directly into your TV and connects to your Wi-Fi network.
What does it do?
The cheap-as-chips gadget essentially turns your dumb-TV into an app-driven smart Smart TV and allows you to sling content; films, games, apps, from your phone, tablet, or PC, directly onto the big screen in your living room.
It has an HDMI output, and a power input, and that’s it. Once it is connected to the TV, you’re instructed to download the Chromecast app that takes you through the set–up process, all of which takes a few minutes.
No extra remote control to clutter up the living room. Your device is the remote control.
In my home, my laptop is the remote control. My son can watch his Naruto in the TV while I still continue my work in my laptop. How wonderful! His TV time is under my control! How cool it is!
For streaming video from a web tab, from my laptop, I need to add an extension to Chrome (my browser). This results in a cast button appearing in the top right of the browser window. Hit this and zoom, youtube is on TV Screen.
Folks, a significant point to be noted. When you use the YouTube app, Chromecast will stream the content directly from the server – not from your mobile device or laptop. So, your device essentially becomes a remote, which means it won’t consume as much battery and you can simultaneously use your device for other purposes.
When you’re not casting, you can turn your TV screen into a beautiful backdrop filled with artwork, personal photos, satellite imagery and more. You can easily learn how to set up this feature at chromecast.com/backdrop.
Google’s Chromecast, is now two years old. Hard to believe? Launched in the US in 2013, the dongle was an immediate success and sold out within days of going on sale. A lot of its success had to do with Google’s pricing, it costs just US $35.
Google has confirmed that Chromecast is now the most popular media streamer in the US.
In Malaysia, it is RM170 inclusive of 6% GST.

Other usages of Chromecast

I have been enjoying Chromecast for the past 2 years without any issues (which I got through my friend from the US). What does that tell? It is reliable.
However, there are other alternatives to chrome cast in the market such as Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Samsung Allshare Cast, Roku Streaming stick etc. Each of them having their own set of features and limitations. Depending on your need and your budget, you can choose the one which is most practical to you.
What are you waiting for? Go ahead and get one for yourself and share here how useful it is to you.
