Best Selling Toy Puzzle of All Time – Rubik’s Cube

Rubik's Cube Where it all started

The most popular and World’s  best selling toy puzzle of all time – Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by a Hungarian architecture professor and sculptor called Ernő Rubik. He was attempting to build a teaching tool for his students to understand 3D objects.  He did not realize that he had created a puzzle when he formed Rubik’s Cube.

It took Mr.Rubik more than a month to solve his own puzzle. He told CNN it was “a very emotional feeling.”

This  colorful puzzle, consisting of small blocks rotating on a central axis, has sold an estimated 350 million units since its conception nearly 43 years ago.

Rubik's Cube God Number is 20

There are 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 (43 quintillion) positions or configurations in a 3x3x3  Rubik’s Cube.

But the number of moves needed to solve any Rubik’s Cube position is twenty moves or less. This is  called the god number.

The god number was identified in 2010, by a group of researchers using 35 years of CPU Time (which is very huge and a lot of computers!) sponsored by Google.

Rubik's Cube Best things about Rubik’s Cube

One of the best things about the Rubik’s Cube is that it is an open-ended puzzle. Once you have the Cube in your hand, you do not need an instruction manual or a rule book to solve it. All the information you need is open and is right in front of you.

Other benefits in solving the Rubik’s Cube

  • Helps your brain to become sharper
  • Good for improving  your hand-eye coordination
  • Greatly increases your concentration
  • Helps to improve your short-term memory
  • Improves cognitive and problem-solving abilities

Of all the above  “the satisfaction” of getting there is unmatched.

You can see that  in Sohail’s face when he solves his Rubik’s Cube in the following video.

Sohail and his Rubik’s Cube

In my community, the famous Speedcuber Mohammad  Sohail Bin Habeebullah can solve a regular 3 by 3 Cube in incredibly short time – 30 seconds! Sohail is currently doing year 7 in elc International School, Malaysia.

Here is some part of my chat with Sohail…

What made you get attracted towards Rubik’s cube?

Sohail: It started when I was going for Arabic tuition. I saw someone doing the Rubik’s cube. I really wanted to solve it, so I asked my dad to buy a cube. A soon as I got it I mixed it up. My dad asked me to solve it without any help from  the internet, but I had no idea how to solve it.

I came across a  youtube video which had lots of likes.  Once I learned how to solve, I wanted to solve faster and faster. Then  Rubik’s Cube became my hobby.

How fast you can do?

Sohail: The fastest time it took me  was 30.37 seconds. I timed myself with the online cube timer. This cube timer is free. It also shows steps how to mix the Rubik’s Cube. There is also an option where we can ch0ose different types of cubes like the 2×2, 4×4, 5×5, Pyraminx and other different cubes to monitor the time.

How long it took for you to do this fast?

Sohail: It took me  about a year to get this fast. I am planning to get faster by learning more algorithms. The method I am using  is called CFOP. CFOP stands for Cross, F2L, Orienteering last layer, Permuting last layer. The last two of CFOP  which is O and P still needs improving. If I improve on it I could get it done in less than 15 seconds.

What are other forms of Rubik’s Cubes?

Sohail: There are tons of variations of Rubik’s Cubes. 2×2, 3×3 until 13×13  etc. There is also Rubiks Magic, Rubiks Master Magic, Skewb, Square 1, Megaminx, Pyraminx, Rubiks Clock, Pentamix- the world’s hardest Rubik’s Cube and many others.
