The 7 Best Things About Internship For High Schoolers

” Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember,  Involve me and I learn” – Benjamin Franklin

True to the above quote, Internship helps the young minds to learn faster. With the current technological growth  in the world, internships need not be only for college graduates, but for high schoolers too.

New digital technologies are now providing a significant change in how  kids learn. One can not deny the fact that digital technologies are making a “learning revolution” in education. Digital technologies enable students to become independent learners and allow them to take charge of their own learning through direct exploration.

When the long school holidays for my kids loomed into the picture, I desperately wanted to find a way for them to spend their time usefully. Two whole months! Please check out my other blog  post “How to keep kids active?”

Especially my 15-year-old son Goutham, High Schooler who wants to become a professional video game developer. Like many kids, he too loves the way the  modern video games entertain the kids by taking them to a virtual world where the possibilities are endless. He argues with me that video gaming should not be considered as a complete waste of time for kids. He seriously says it helps kids to socialize, allows them to react faster, develops problem-solving skill and most importantly it boosts their creativity.

As a mom, and a web developer I tried to  think of  ways to expose him to the software world.

I felt that with the world moving fast, and kids becoming successful entrepreneurs  at their teens, it is best to get exposure to the real world as soon as they are ready and willing. Goutham was more than  ready and very willing to learn.

In turn, it led me to send him for  an internship training in IT.

With a quick google search, I was fortunate to find an Internship offer from Compurex , a software developing corporation.  In addition to software development, they were offering internships in many other fields such as administration, telecommunication, and marketing.

To my delight, they evaluated him and accepted him as an Industrial Trainee in software development.

Here is Goutham’s sharing …

“Hello I am Goutham and I am fifteen years old and I go to elc International School.

Based nearby to Sunway Giza Shopping mall, “Compurex” office is situated within a large building made up of several different companies. Upon entering for the very first time; my first impressions were that the office was welcoming, modern and professional.

Compurex serves various industries with their innovative IT products  which offer robust business solutions.

On my first day as an Intern, I didn’t know exactly what I was getting myself into. But my project manager “Ms. Sam Chia ”  helped me settle in quickly.

Since I initially did not have a large skill set, I was made to update and fix minor errors in the HTML codes of the several websites hosted by the company. Along the way, I learned jQuery to modify the animations of several particularly eye-catching websites.

WithProjectManagerAlso,  I was given the task of updating their websites  content  because my proficiency in English. This was an invaluable experience and allowed me to truly see everything that goes into a website!

I also learned about the process that goes into error-checking software as I was included in the Alpha testing of several programs the company was to release.

What made the internship a wonderful experience for me  was the trust and the flexibility given to the interns here at Compurex.

OtherInternsWithin work, office colleagues and other interns were so friendly and I had lunch with them every day.

Overall, I learned quite a bit about how the ‘office life’ works and all the responsibilities that can come with a job, as well as some pointers improving my programming and coding skills.”

According to the  Chronicle of Higher Education, the  most critical elements in hiring a fresh graduate are work experience,  extracurricular activities and charitable work along with good grades.

Work experience is the crucial attribute that employers want, even for students who have yet to get a full-time job.

Especially Media/Communications employers who look to internships as an alternative to employment in a much more positive way than other industries.

Only Education and Health Care employers feel that a graduate degree has more impact on their evaluation than internships.

The 7 Best things about Internship

1.Shapes your career path for better

High school students are increasingly finding that the real-world experience of an internship can help decide on a career path. Having an internship can definitely be something that transforms your life and gives you new insights into your education.

2.Test drive your knowledge and skills

An internship gives you a chance to test out your career choices to determine whether they are a good fit for your skills, interests, and goals without making a long term commitment.

3. Helps in learning  the real value of networking

Since most young adults are “device-dependent,” they struggle with the spontaneous, here and now, give and take of a real conversation. An Internship provides an environment to practice  professional behavior. Practice makes one perfect. Also, networking means not only connecting with experts who will support your efforts but, also  as a student, you’ll certainly benefit from hearing an outside perspective.

Furthermore, contacts made through internships can be invaluable sources of information for future job searches.

By achieving personal growth and helps to build confidence as you take on new challenges.

5. Helps in learning  from mistakes. Its is ok to be wrong

You’ll probably get a number of things wrong during your internship, but it doesn’t mean you’re a failure as an intern. In reality, failure is a huge element of your learning experience. As long as you are making an effort to get the most important things right during your internship, you’ll still reach success

6.Improves your resume

Documenting  your internship achievements  beefs up your resume.

7.Helps in getting into the college of your choice

An Internship can become an academic credit when you apply for colleges. It shows how committed you are in achieving your goals.

Businesses are increasingly realizing that they too can benefit from building relationships with high school students who are motivated enough to seek them out.

Internships are what you make of them. It’s not a Job, It’s an Education.

Nice article Manju. Good on ya, you are channelizing Gowtham’s energy in the right way. More and more corporates require industry ready graduates. This effort of yours will go long way in making him ready to take on challenges.

Reluctance of managers to hire trainees is the main challenge. Busy with their own deadlines, many managers try to avoid training, if the person is not likely to be hired after the training session. If pressurized by bosses, they often give the intern some meaningless tasks. This is particularly true if the intern is a high school student. Glad to see your son got some relevant experience.
